Summary: Fuma’s baseball team has a friendly match the next day and he didn’t want Kento to come and watch but Kento insisted he would come since he has a promise to fulfil. What could it be?
-----
“So.” Fuma shifted his head and pinned the phone between his ear and shoulder, a small pout forming on his lips. He was sitting comfortably on his bed as he cleaned the spikes of his baseball cleats as a preparation for tomorrow’s friendly match.
“Like I said. I promised!” The voice on the other end whined, a bit exasperated. “I didn’t even know that your next match would be against my school. Don’t worry. I’ll still cheer you on.”
Fuma sighed and brushed his ruffled hair. This is going nowhere. “Nakajima, that’s foul play.” He shifted to keep the phone intact to his ear as he looked up to check the time. It was quarter to 10 in the evening and he knew he had to rest soon. “And besides, your friends are also in the baseball club right?” Fuma finished his maintenance with his spikes and artfully placed them inside his sports bag. He ran a double check on the things he should have in his bag for tomorrow’s match. He mentally checked the list on his mind and zipped his bag close as he concluded that he’s set to go tomorrow.
“But Fuma-kun!” Kento wined louder. It was always tough to get through his best friend with his hard personality.
“Now look here. I think it would be best for you not to come.” Irritation masked on the older boy’s voice. Every baseball match is important. ‘And this call is using up the time for me to save my energy.’ Fuma’s inner athlete voice reminded him to hang up and sleep. Tomorrow is another big day and losing is not an option... most especially if it’s due to lack of sleep.
“I’ll just go tomorrow to your house after the match.” Fuma said blandly as he tucked himself comfortably on his bed, pulling the blanket up to his chest. He yawned a long one and rubbed his eyes open. Truthfully though, he still wants this conversation to go on. “I’m tired already.”
“But.. but Fuma-kun!” Kento’s delicate voice seemed to get crispier and had leapt an octave as he said that in a state of panic. He knew he has a lot more of things to say, but this innocent fight seemed to drag him down. “Ahh! I don’t care what you say anymore. I’ll go, and that’s it! You hear me?” He fumed.
‘This kid really gets angry too quick.’ A small smirk crept on Fuma’s lips. It’s just fun to tease this person most especially that his sullen face seems to transcend space as Kento’s sigh and pout can be heard from the receiver of the phone. “Nakajima, it’s not about the promise.” But sure enough, Fuma is weak against this young boy’s charm. “It’s...” He cut off his explanation, trying to formulate the sentence he would say next to keep his composure as a guy.
“Like I’d let you cheer on your teammates while I’m the ace on our team.” Just thinking about it plagues his inner self, burning the members of Kento’s baseball team, mentally.
“You can’t just decide on that Fuma-kun! I’m going! I’m going and that’s final!” With that, Kento hung up, leaving no room for another argument. On the other end, Fuma was left speechless, listening to the eerie sound of the dial tone until he snapped from his reverie and plopped the phone on his bed.
He sighed deeply, turned off his lamp on his bedside table, and covered his eyes with his left arm. ‘Kento is...’ he stirred to his side. ‘really unbelievable.’ Fuma thought before he drifted off to a deep sleep.
-----
Early the next day, Fuma’s baseball team had started with their warm up exercises and field maintenance. Half of the team were stretching in pairs and practising throw and catch while the other half were inspecting the field for rocks and muddy areas to be covered to maintain the flat surface of the land. Fuma was with the team’s couch, discussing the team play, positioning of members in the field and order of batters.
“I think it would be best if Juri would be the cleanup hitter.” The ace suggested to the coach, staring still at the list attached on the clipboard. “Since among the members, I presume that he is the most qualified for it based on his performance on our training and recently his batting strength has increased. It seems as though he has been training his arms.” He concluded; satisfied, as he saw their coach nod in agreement.
“As planned, I’ll be the eight batter and Hokuto shall follow up as the second lead-off hitter.” Fuma added, hoping that this was the best line-up for today’s game. Soon, he called the whole team to give the final line-up and announcements. “Same ol as per fielding.
First Base, Hokuto.
Second Base, Keigo.
Third Base, Juri.
Shortstop, Jesse.
Left, Shintaro.
Center, Sanada.
Right, Nozawa.
Catcher, Takada.
Pitcher, Kikuchi.
Batting though will differ with Juri as the cleanup hitter and Hokuto as the second lead-off hitter a.k.a the 9th batter—a crucial position for the first at bat.” Fuma paussed as he saw the other team come in from the B side gate. He examined each and every member who got in but at the last person, he clicked his tongue and glared hard.
‘Kento’ He twitched. ‘That damn squirrel’ The team’s ace dismissed his team and made his way to the rival group for some formalities. ‘He has a lot of explaining to do.’ He eyed the awkward manager checking all their game equipment… who seemed to be the person he was having a fight with last night.
“Thank you for accepting this friendly match.” Fuma reached out his hand and the other team’s captain shook it with pleasure.
“I hope to have a good match with you, Kikuchi-san” Iwahashi Genki responded with a sleek smile. “I was ecstatic when I heard our manager accepted the match with you guys.” He added, eager for the game to begin.
“Though I really though, I was having a conversation with a female manager.” Fuma exclaimed, quite asking and emphasized the word ‘female’. He was definite that the person he talked with was not Kento or rather was definitely not a guy
.
“Ahh, you mean Hana. Something came up today and was not able to come so she asked Kento to sub for today.”
There was no real meaning to it but for some reason, Fuma was on edge hearing the other captain mention the sub’s first name. ‘Friendly, aren’t we?’
“I see.” He took a quick side way glance at the said person and ended the formality for Genki’s team to start with the warm up and start the game.
-----
“Top of first inning, offense leads off with the first batter, Center- Sanada Yuma. Batting first, Center- Sanada Yuma.” The announcement resounded clearly. The fielding team had all their eyes focused on the called batter with the pitcher on the mound getting ready, anticipating the game play of the catcher.
Iwahashi made a quick nod at the signal and threw his first pitch. A friendly match is still a game that must be played off with the intent of winning.
“STRIKE!” A perfect catch for the catcher. It was a good fastball, showing off what the team is made off with the fielding team’s follow up with shouts of affirmation on Genki’s pitch. The batter trudged on his box, levelling the ground and readied himself for the next pitch. “STRIKE!” Sanada Yuma went for an attack.
“STRIKE! Batter out!” The fielding team’s battery got the game going on their hands. The start off was on their favour and they knew they should keep it up.
Kento, on the other hand was busy recording and examining both team’s play for future reference; however, just by being there he can’t seem to focus well. His eyes would occasionally move to check on the other team’s captain, Fuma. Surely, last night’s conversation did not go well and today he went to the game. What more is that… he did not tell Fuma that he was subbing for the team manager.
‘I’ll definitely get it later.’ Kento sighed. ‘But he didn’t even let me talk last night.’ He was still mad about last night since it was being one sided. ‘And besides…’ the sub-manager sadly looked at his bag. “Ah! Who cares!”
“Nice Bat!” Kento snapped out of his own soliloquy as he heard the other team cheering. It was already the fouth at bat and Tanaka Juri seemed to hit the ball far enough for him to reach second base. ‘Ah! Snap out of it! First is this match.’ He stood up, filled with determination.
“Two Outs! Watch for home!” He shouted to keep his focus back on the game.
-----
‘That bitch!’ Fuma grumbled. Now, he’s ticked off for sure. “I’ll show them.” He said under his breath. “Nozawa, you’re next. Get ready.” He heard the said person clatter from his seat, dashing to the on deck circle. Fuma clicked his tongue, a frown plastered on his face. ‘That’s why I told him not to come. He’s such a big distraction!’
Out of his counted mannerisms, he had this habit of taping his forefinger as he would cross his arms before his chest whenever he’s irritated. Most of the time, it would all be because of his ever all-too-good best bud and right now, he is still the cause of this uncalled popping of vein.
But the truth be told, it is also his fault for stealing side way glances just to know what Kento is doing which just adds to his rising temper whenever the said guy would cheer on his teammates. ‘Fuma you’re so uncool.’ He reprimanded himself coz he knew far too well that he won’t be able to stay calm until the game is over.
Fuma flared up; despite the problem at hand, first things first is to win today’s match and then resolve the other matter afterwards. “Keigo, Home!” He reminded the runner on third base to focus. The first inning is still 0/0 with the first two batters struck out. One more out on the attacking team and they would have to change, but before that; at least they must acquire one home for the team.
“STRIKE THREE! BATTER OUT” The announcer’s voice shot through the speakers and both teams readied for their positions. Fuma was on the pitcher’s mound as soon as his battery partner, Takada Sho, had put on his protective gear and the two had practiced throw and catch.
On the mound, Fuma had a perfect view of the two team’s benches. He was monitoring his team members waiting patiently for his fielding team. Well, it would also be good for them to take their time so he can have more warm up practice with his pitch… and… well… spying on the other team.
‘Sub-manager, my ass.’ A quick glance and he threw another pitch. Kento was doing a good job servicing his teammates. He was going around giving them cold energy drinks and discussing the information he had compiled on the first part of the first inning.
‘Flirt.’
“Batting first, First Baseman- Iwamoto Hikaru. Batting first, First Baseman- Iwamoto Hikaru.” The first batter got into his box and readied himself with a bunt position.
‘Bunting? Either they are playing it safe or he’s just showing off a bunt.’ Fuma mentally assessed as he waited for Takada to give a sign. He nodded nonchalantly at the catcher and followed it with his pitch. ‘straight.’ The contact of the ball to the batt made a loud thunk due to the power exerted by Fuma as he threw his fastball.
“IN!” Anticipating for the ball to be at the area between the battery, Lewis Jesse, as the team short stop, was on guard and ran as soon as the ball was hit. He got the ball with ease and immediately threw the ball to the first baseman.
“Batter out!” The umpire shouted, raising a closed fist.
“Nice follow up, Jesse.” Fuma grinned and caught the ball thrown to him by Hokuto, who was guarding the first base. He dabbled the ball twice on his mitten and made eye-contact with the catcher. “Batting second, Third Baseman- Jinguji Yuta. Batting second, Third Baseman- Jinguji Yuta.” This is it, they were anticipating him. Out of all the members, they had the least information about him, thus the battery had to stall this game for a moment to gain data on their opponent.
Fuma nodded on the sign and made his pitch. “BALL!” Jinguji sure had his eyes closely on the ball. ‘A slider on the outer edge. Not bad, he got that.’ Fuma smoothened his footing on the plate. ‘Next would be a curveball from the outer edge, to the outside of the strike zone.’ He nodded on the sign and threw the ball.
The trajectory went up and down but the batter waited and at the right time, Jinguji swung his batt and made contact with the ball. “RIGHT, NOZAWA!!” A foul ball, but he must catch it. “NOZAWA!” The right fielder ran with all his might and jumped! “Batter out!” Nozawa Yuki caught the ball.
-----
‘Fuma-kun is amazing.’ Kento was in a trance. He never knew a pitcher can be this cool… HECK- he never knew, Fuma can be this cool. There was a slight tint on pink on his cheeks. ‘I never knew Fuma, playing baseball, can be sly.’ He bit his lower lips and wrote his observation on his notebook. ‘Not like, he knew how cool he can be.’
“Batting third, Left fielder- Morohoshi Shoki. Batting third, Left fielder- Morohoshi Shoki.” Still a tie of 0/0 and the first inning might end as it is. The fielding team’s pitcher readied himself and took a deep breath. ‘This time, a slider… down and in, outside of the zone.’ Fuma got the signal and pitched.
“Strike!” Takada Sho stood up right away and threw back the ball. “Nice pitch!” He shouted and went back to his position and gave a sign. ‘A Shoot.’ The pitcher nodded and threw the ball. It was, however, a clean hit with a ground ball, passing in between the pitcher and third base. As Jesse got the ball, it was too late to throw the ball to the first base.
“Batter on base! Ready, second base!” Fuma announced, wiping the sweat forming on his forehead. He once again smoothened his footing on the plate and received the Sho’s pitch selection. For the fourth batter, it took them three pitches and ended the first inning.
The team got back on the bench and drank refreshments while the team captain hurried to the manager, checking the information that was gathered. “We have to attack right away.” Takada Sho joined in to come up with a plan.
` “Yeah I guess.” Fuma answered back. “Since this is just a friendly match, the innings would be reduced.” He smiled. “No matter what, we must win.”
-----
“Four innings, Game Set 6/4. It was a good game.” Fuma plopped himself on the bench and covered his eyes with a towel. It was an intense match and though it had drained him too much; they still won.
“Good job, Ace!” Fuma removed the towel on his face and was come face to face with Shintaro. The two made a complicated handshake and grinned unknowingly. “With this, we will go to the Koshien League!” They made a bro fist as a sign of approval on the idea. The Koshien League is, of course, every high school’s baseball club’s dream. “With the Koshien League in mind, we will train really hard, definitely.” Fuma’s voice was filled with enthusiasm.
‘Ah!’ He just remembered something and glanced at the other team. They were already packing up and no hard feelings; it was a great game and their team sure had fun as well. Fuma excused himself for a bit and went to have a word with the other group.
“Iwahashi-san, thank you for today. It was a great match.” Fuma shook hands with the other team captain.
“Same here. Today is a good experience for my team.” Genki replied. “I hope to have another match with you someday or if not, let’s meet at the League.” He added enthusiastically as he wiped the sweat off his face with a towel.
“I’ll be looking forward to it.” Fuma had a wide smile plastered on his face. He really likes guys who are optimistic. It makes him want to try his best even more for himself and for his team.
“Then, we’ve got to be going now.” Genki bowed and turned on his heel. He has a lot to discuss with his team once they got back to their school and then have a new practice timetable. “Oh wait.” He stopped on his tracks. “I think Nakajima-kun would be staying for a while.” The young captain turned around with a cheeky smile.
“As much as I want to invite him for dinner with the team as thanks for today… it seems that he has an engagement with you.” He tried to stifle a laugh as he stare at Fuma’s unpainted expression and left in a hurry. A pay back for defeating their team
.
Fuma scurried to their team awkwardly and packed his things. Once done, he hauled his bag and said his farewell to the team. Screw further discussions, he had rescheduled that at the moment and left. Just for now, he was being an irresponsible captain.
But that can’t be helped.
“Nakajima!” Fuma tried to catch his breath as he got right beside Kento.
“Ah, congratulations on winning.” The other said without hesitation.
“YOU STUPID IDIOT!!” The team captain yelled and glared as a matter of fact at the now shocked sub manager. What he said was uncalled for and what now? Another fight? “Why didn’t you even tell me that you’ll be subbing as a manager on the team?” He asked in a rather hoarse voice.
“Eh?! But you never even gave me the chance to!” Kento retorted. “And besides, aren’t you even happy that I came?” He pouted and looked at the ground.
Fuma wasn’t able to argue back since he was right on the first statement… Well, he was happy that Kento was there to watch the match as well but.
“Argh! Fine.” He lost and ran a hand through his now messy hair. “Anyway, I promised to go to your house today.” Fuma changed the topic right away. He wouldn’t want to spoil their day with another argument .
“Let’s go to the park first.” Kento happily dragged Fuma, grasping his left hand. “You might have forgotten but I kept my promise.” He giggled and had the ace captain sit on a bench. Kento then, unzipped his bag and brought out a box wrapped with a purple cloth. He sat down beside Fuma and unwrapped the box he brought.
“Tada~” The black haired kid proudly opened the box and revealed a very sweet looking energizer. “I made honey lemons!” He huffed and made a peace sign, looking all proud of his work. “It’s my first time making, I hope it’s all good.”
Fuma stared at the delicacy on his lap. He was speechless beyond words. He really did forget that Kento promised to make this for today’s match. ‘That’s why he was so persistent on coming.’ Fuma took a slice and plopped it on his mouth.
“SOUR!” He made a face and looked at the other with a questioning look.
“Eh? But- but” Kento panicked.
“Were you eating something a while ago?” Fuma asked, his face inches away from his best bud.
“Ah well.” Kento avoided eye-contact. “I was just munching on some candy.”
“Really?” The other asked doubtingly.
“Rea- umpf!” Before Kento could protest, his lips were taken rather forcibly. He shut his eyes on the impact and of the sweet chaste taste of honey lemon tickling his tongue. He felt his heartbeat stop for a moment and rush of heat went up to his cheeks.
“Lemon candy.” Fuma whispered as he broke the kiss. He grinned mischievously and licked his lips, contented as he imprinted on his mind the dazed expression of his little squirrel.
He then plopped another lemon on his mouth and again, made a sour face. “Not bad.” He chuckled.
“Our first honey lemons.”
